The Children's Aid Society of Ottawa has supported the
CAST (Children's Aid Society Teens) consumer advocacy program since 1974. When CAST was originally established, the acronym
stood for Children's Aid Survivors in Training. The name was chosen by the youth as they felt they would "survive" the CAS
system, not necessarily because of what CAS did for them but rather, in spite of what the CAS system did to them or did not
do for them. The name was changed to mean Children's Aid Society Teens in 1984 by the planning team.
